Pads or Tampons: Which Is Better for Your Period Flow?

It’s time to tackle the eternal question: pads or tampons? If you're new to menstruation or are simply looking to switch up your menstrual products, you may be wondering which is better. Well, both are popular menstrual products that offer reliable protection, but they do have their differences.

In this blog post, we'll be exploring the benefits of pads and tampons, and when to use each product depending on your period flow. We'll also discuss absorbency levels and the potential risks associated. So, let’s dive in…

Pads vs. Tampons: The Benefits

Pads are worn on the outside of the body and come in a variety of sizes and shapes. Disposable pads are usually held in place by a sticky backing that attaches to your underwear, but reusable pads usually have a popper that clicks into place and to keep you protected. Tampons, on the other hand, are inserted into the vagina and come in a range of sizes and absorbencies. They can sometimes offer more discreet protection and are ideal for those with a moderate to heavy flow.

In addition to their differences in placement and sizing, pads and tampons offer different benefits that may suit different lifestyles and preferences.

One of the main benefits of pads is that they are generally considered to be more comfortable and less invasive than tampons. Since pads are worn outside of the body, this makes pads a great option for those who find tampons a bit uncomfortable or struggle with the whole "where does it go again?" situation. Additionally, pads can offer that extra sense of security for those who are concerned about leaks or accidents, so you can tackle your day with confidence, knowing that you're covered.

Tampons, on the other hand, offer greater freedom of movement and flexibility. Since they are inserted into the vagina, they’re a game-changer for active folks. At DAME, we are strong believers that your period should never get in the way of life! So, if you're someone who loves to stay active, enjoy hitting the gym or swimming, tampons can be your trusty sidekick.

Another factor to consider is the environmental impact of these products. While both pads and tampons can generate waste, reusable pads and tampon applicators can be a more eco-friendly option as you can wash them up and use them again and again, reducing the amount of waste produced. Reusable pads and tampon applicators are the superheroes of sustainability! Ideally, you could opt for our tampons - that are made with organic or biodegradable materials - which can also reduce your impact on the environment.

Choosing the Right Product for Your Flow

It's important to note that choosing the right product for your flow isn't just about comfort and convenience. It's also about ensuring that you have adequate protection against leaks and accidents. Pads and tampons come in a variety of absorbancies, and it's essential to choose the right one for you and your needs.

For pads, there are three levels of absorbency: liner (light), regular, and night (heavy). Liner pads are best for spotting or for the beginning or end of your period when your flow is lightest. Regular pads are suitable for a moderate flow, and heavier night-time pads are designed for those with a heavier flow or for overnight use. It's always important to choose the right level of absorbency for your flow to prevent leaks and accidents.

When it comes to tampons, there's lots of options to cater to your flow. Tampons come in different absorbencies, usually labelled as regular, super, or super plus. Regular tampons are designed for those with a lighter flow, while super and super plus tampons are better suited for those with a heavier flow. Make sure you’re choosing the right absorbency level to prevent leaks!

It’s also important to choose the appropriate absorbency level to prevent the rare but serious condition known as Toxic Shock Syndrome (TSS) when using tampons. TSS is a bacterial infection that can occur when tampons are left in for too long, and it can potentially be life-threatening. To minimise the risk of TSS, it's important to change your tampon every four to eight hours, depending on your menstrual flow.

Sometimes, it's all about finding the perfect combination to keep you feeling confident and leak-free. For example, on heavier flow days, you might opt for a tampon and a pad (or even period pants) for that extra layer of backup. .

Making the Choice Between Pads and Tampons Easier

Deciding between pads and tampons can be a personal choice based on your preferences and lifestyle, and both can offer you reliable protection. When choosing between pads and tampons, our top tip is to consider your flow, absorbency level, and the potential risks associated with use.
