👉 INSERTING YOUR DAME CUP
1. Getting ready to insert
OK it’s time to do this. For many of you, this is the bit you haven’t been looking forward to. The cup may look a lot larger than a tampon, but it’s super soft and malleable, and one you’ve found the insertion technique that works for you, it’ll be a breeze.
We recommend finding some time when you’re not in a rush, feeling relaxed, and can experiment a little bit.

2. Pick your cup fold
The first big decision you need to make is how are you going to fold the cup? There are 3 main options:
1) The C fold
2) The 7 fold
3) The punch down
💡 Top tip from our customers
We find that most of our customers opt for the c fold when they first get the cup, it’s the simplest fold after all. Interestingly, however, we’ve been told a lot of people switch to the punch down over time as it has the narrowest tip, so most resembles inserting a tampon. Have a play and find out what works best for you.
3. Assume the position
There are 3 main body positions to help with insertion. The squat, the leg up and the very complicated ‘sitting on the toilet’
4. Where does the cup actually go?
A simple, but very important question. It sits in your vaginal canal like a tampon, but a couple of centimetres lower. If you insert the cup higher up nearer you cervix, it may shift around as your vaginal canal is wider there.

👌 REMOVING YOUR DAME CUP
1. How to remove your DAME cup?
The cup stays put thanks to the vacuum seal it creates. To remove it, first wash your hands and then you just need to give it a pinch to break the seal, and carefully pull it out.
Important advice: Don’t pull on the stem, it’s not going to do anything, other than feel a bit weird.
2. Removing your cup on the go
It’s likely that at some point you will have to empty your cup at work or in a public toilet. Ideally you should always give your cup a rinse after emptying it, but this can be tricky on the go. If you have a water bottle, you could use that to give it a quick rinse OVER the toilet in the cubicle, but if that’s not option then you can always just give it a pat with some loo roll, then maybe give it a rinse when you next have access to water.
💡 Top tip from our customers on how to remove your cup for the first time
One of the best bits of advice we’ve had from our customers, is to first try removing the cup in a warm shower. You’ll be relaxed and you won’t be worried about spilling blood if you do it wrong.
💦 CLEANING YOUR DAME CUP
If you are using the DAME Period Cup then your cup is self-sanitizing. This means you do not need to boil the cup between uses. Pretty cool, right?
If you’re using this page for the useful guidance, but you’re using another brand’s period cup, then it’s likely you’re going to need to boil your cup between periods to sterlize it. We recommend reading their instructions, but normally they recommend submerging the cup in a pot of boiling water for 5-10 minutes.
How can the DAME cup be self-sanitizing?
The DAME cup is powered by natural, biocide-free Saniconcentrates™, meaning that the cup is resistant to 99.9% of bacteria and viruses (tested to ISO 22196). Saniconcentrate™ contains a biocompatible element that works against bacteria attachment and proliferation, helping the cup to stay clean without the need for sterilisation or boiling. The Saniconcentrates™ are integral to the material, so they will not rub off or degrade over time.
🧼 WASHING AND STORAGE
When your period ends
When it comes to the end of your period we recommend giving your cup an extra good clean with some soapy water, and then thoroughly drying it.
Our favourite tip for cleaning your cup is the “palm squeeze”. Fill the cup with water and place the rim against the palm of your hand. Then turn it over and squeeze it so the water shoots out the small holes on the sides.
Storing your cup
Your DAME period cup comes with a nifty little cotton bag, this is the perfect bag for storing your cup in between periods. It will stop any dust from settling on the cup, whilst still being breathable, allowing any moisture to evaporate.
