Every year, our tiny island throws away 1.3 billion non-recyclable plastic applicators. That’s a big splash for a piece of plastic used for a few seconds. Not to mention it then goes on to leach toxic chemicals into the earth for hundreds of years. Period products are currently the 5th most common item found on European shores and in fact, they pollute more than single-use coffee cups, cutlery or straws. Most of us would much rather see pebbles on those beaches!
As creators of the world’s first reusable tampon applicator, turning the tide on unnecessary plastic waste is our mission. That’s why a DAME and City to Sea partnership on their Plastic-Free Periods campaign was love at first fight. Not to mention, City to Sea are an epic not-for-profit, plastic-busting organisation.
“We all have different bodies, different lifestyles and different periods. We’re so excited to be working with DAME to offer people a seriously sustainable alternative to applicator tampons. Collaboration is at the heart of creating a safer, cleaner, greener world.” says Jasmine Tribe - Plastic Free Periods Campaign Manager at City to Sea.
Three years since its launch, Plastic Free Periods has gone from humble beginnings to a national campaign and is still making waves. With DAME now aboard the change-maker ship, we’re set for a course of lobbying government, influencing retailers and breaking taboos as one.
Alone, our impacts are drops in the ocean but together we can change the tides. Joined at the hip, we can combine our shared love of the planet and our advocacy for rejecting single-use plastic to make actionable change.
